Making balanced choices

How do you know if you’re making the balanced choice?

Deciding between saying yes and saying no may seem to be a simple task, but have you ever thought about how often you choose one over the other, or how that balance is affecting your life?

Always yes. Saying yes can be extremely beneficial. By agreeing to a multitude of work opportunities, social events and adventurous activities, you can keep busy, try new things and meet new people. However, saying yes to any and all tasks without hesitation could cause you to stretch yourself too thin, meaning you lack energy, engagement and enjoyment in the activities you agreed to.

No way. Saying no is an effective way to stand your ground and place boundaries, allowing you to prioritise your own needs from time to time. But saying no too often can mean you’re living within the smallest of comfort zones and missing out on vital opportunities.

In the balance. Everyone should form guidelines for themselves as to when to say yes and when to say no. Think about what you truly want from the situation and how you could help others without jeopardising your own wellbeing, especially since saying yes to one thing, means you may be saying no to another.

The next time you are faced with a yes or no opportunity, take some time to notice how you balance your decision. Which answer will have the best outcome in both the short term and long term for you? The choice is yours.
