Stephanie Sy-Quia’s vivid and compelling poems move us through time and space, exploring what it means to be a person of many cultures, the ongoing impact of colonisation on families, and the experience of intergenerational trauma. Each poem expertly weaves together biography, history, blistering emotions, and bodily experience to paint a compelling picture of numerous lives lived. An intriguing combination of literary forms, Amnion features aspects of prose fiction, epic poetry, and references to classical mythology to create an emotional landscape, against which a family reaches each other across generations. The fragments of text leave you wanting to know more about each journey and invite us to think about our own families – the family we make for ourselves as well as the one we are born into.
