Elizabeth Lowry exquisitely explores the question of who pays the price of a writer’s fame in this compelling novel. The lyrical quality of the prose expertly depicts the grief, remorse, and frustration of a myriad of unanswered questions that permeate this fictional representation of Thomas Hardy in the early days after the death of his wife, Emma. In this novel, Emma Hardy is once again given a voice, becomes once more the narrator of her own life, and through this retelling readers are invited to consider the unknowable – to hear two sides of a story, to experience how two people can so differently exist inside the one marriage. A beautiful, heartbreaking novel.
