An enthralling and thought-provoking novel, Thunderhead is about one woman’s struggle to be free from the shackles of domesticity and her abusive husband. Told over the course of one chaos-filled day, Miranda Darling brings to life the protagonist Winona Dalloway’s insistence to be heard in such a way that we, as readers, feel compelled to listen. Winona’s narrative voice is full of humour, insight, and energy, and there’s something wonderfully unique and yet totally relatable about it. Darling’s prose is stark and yet beautiful, and she’s used this talent to masterfully craft a timely, astute, and darkly funny narrative. It’s one I can see myself rereading over and over.
