Winter whiskies

Try two cool-climate cocktails perfect for warming you from within.

Some things are just meant to be enjoyed during cold weather. Snuggling under a blanket, toasting marshmallows on a fire, and sipping hot drinks from a mug cupped in your hands. And when it comes to winter cocktails, there are two classic variations that rule over all; the hot toddy and the Irish coffee.

Hot toddy

This light and hydrating beverage is traditionally a delicious combination of whisky, hot water, honey and lemon. Variations can include green or black tea and a variety of spices like cinnamon sticks, star anise, and cloves, but many agree that the simplest version is still the best. Heat up a cup of water and pour into a mug, add 50ml of whisky, one or two teaspoons of honey, two teaspoons of lemon juice, and stir until everything has combined. Garnish with a lemon round and it’s ready to enjoy!

Irish coffee

Making an Irish coffee is a simple task of making some piping hot filtered coffee, filling a mug three quarters and then stirring in a tablespoon of brown sugar. Add approximately 50ml of Irish whiskey and top carefully with heavy cream that’s been very lightly whipped. A mid-range blended whiskey like Jameson Original or Powers Gold Label is perfect for an Irish coffee, since the coffee is likely to overshadow the subtle flavours of a single malt. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also try swapping out the classic whiskey/whisky for rum, brandy or cognac.

While it’s always interesting to sample original and classic recipes, it’s important to remember the real point of drinking these delicious warming beverages: for your own comfort.
