Create your own meditation space at home

How to set up a wellness space perfect for you.

While it’s nice to enjoy yoga in a studio, guided by your teacher through a calming yoga nidra, it’s often not manageable to do so every day. So why not add home meditation to your routine by creating a relaxing space just for you? After all, it’s much easier to find a quiet half an hour to yourself than to make it to the studio daily, and the benefits of meditation within a special place of your own are numerous – reduced blood pressure and stress, enhanced self-awareness, increased attention span, and even improved sleep.

Whether it’s a permanent room or a temporary space, Mindful Puzzles has the following ideas for creating a harmonious haven dedicated to refreshing you both physically and mentally.

Choose Carefully

Before you begin, choose your space. It can be a dedicated room or a temporary area, either way consider when and how you like to meditate. Do you enjoy direct or filtered sunlight, indoor or outdoor, light or dark? Try to find a quiet space with limited exposure to traffic noise and foot traffic.

Declutter and Decorate

Before you can create your perfect calm oasis, you need to clear the space of any clutter or distractions. Make a list of what you want to include in your space and remove anything that’s not on that list.

Part of decluttering includes decluttering your mind. Leave your phone in another room or, if you play soothing music or a meditation guide, turn off the notifications, turn on the music, and put your phone out of immediate reach so you won’t be tempted to check your social feeds. After all, a meditative space is not only the physical place around you, but the mental space within you.

Fresh Air

Bring the natural world in. If your space is in a garden, balcony or enclave, fresh air will be a constant, but if you’re meditating in an interior room, try to create a well-ventilated space. Open a window to allow breezes to waft over you, or if that’s not possible, try a standing fan with noise reduction technology.

The Four Elements

If you’re not sure where to begin with decorating your space, or if you even should, it’s helpful to keep it simple by introducing each of the four elements in some way. Earth, water, air, and fire; each can guide your mind to the natural world while not being intrusive and distracting you from your meditative state. Water features, plants, and essential oils are all calming influences during meditation. The Minikin Transcendence range by Koh Living is a wonderful way to introduce a fire element to your space. Each fine white porcelain lantern, sitting on a round wooden base, glows when lit up from within by a tealight candle, and the flickering patterns and soft warm light offer a sense of peace, harmony, and calm.

Comfort

Perhaps the most important factor you should consider when arranging your meditation space is how you can make it comfortable. Whether you include cushions, a yoga mat, a blanket or even a reclining chair or bed, make sure your meditation is as physically relaxing as it is mentally soothing.

Whether you practise daily meditation or just want a calm, quiet haven to spend time resetting your thoughts, creating a meditation space is a wonderful way to offer yourself healing relaxation. Visit our friends at www.kohliving.com.au for mindful giftware.
