Perennial petals

Missing the dreamy days of spring? Why not create your very own origami iris?

Begin with your desired pattern face down. Fold the paper in half, edge to edge both ways and unfold.

Fold the bottom left corner to meet the top right.

Taking both outside corners, pinch them together to meet at the centre, then flatten, creating layered panels.

Once in the shape of a small, flat diamond, half-fold in the right-hand side to meet the crease in the centre and unfold.

Taking the right-hand corner, slowly bring to the centre to open a small pocket and flatten, lining up the centre creases.

Take the small tab on the left-hand side and fold over to reach the next flat panel.

Repeat steps 4 to 6 on this panel creating another pocket. Then fold over the right-hand tab to reach the flat panel created in between the two pockets.

Fold the top corner down to meet the bottom corner in a flower fold, then fold in the corners of the diamond and flatten.

Take the bottom corner and fold back up, creating a smaller diamond.

Half-fold the lower edges of this diamond in to meet the centre crease, then turn paper over to the unfolded side.

Repeat steps 4 to 10 on this side.

Take the outside corner and fold over to the left side, to expose unfolded panel.

Repeat steps 8 to 10 on this panel, then take the last remaining unfolded panel on the opposite side and repeat steps 8 to 10.

Now that you have created the flower base, open each point on top of the iris, slowly pulling down to open the petals to complete your iris.

When you’re done take a cute snap and tag us in your photos. We’d love to see all of your beautiful creations!
