Solo travelling activities

Writer and screenwriter Michelle Law shares a few tips on travelling solo.

SOLO ACTIVITIES TO TRY

  • Visit a local cinema. (Make sure the film is subtitled if you’re in a country where you don’t speak the language!)
  • Do a cooking class and learn how to prepare a traditional meal
  • Go for a walk or jog or hire a bike or scooter to discover what’s nearby your accommodation for future reference. Look out for essentials like grocery stores, cafés, pharmacies, and parks
  • Join a guided tour at a museum or gallery
  • Write and send postcards to loved ones
  • Do some journalling
  • Splurge at a deli or bakery and take yourself out on a picnic.
  • Find an independent bookstore. They will often have a café tucked away in the back or upstairs, which are lovely places to recharge with tea and cake. Many independent bookstores also have a list of upcoming events like book launches and author talks you can attend for free or for a small fee.
  • Slow down and get a massage. You are allowed to relax and don’t need to be moving at all times.
  • Go to a gig and discover some local musicians, artists, or stand-up comedians.
  • Take photos of yourself or ask others to take photos of you. Trust me. You don’t want to get home and have hundreds of photos of the cool things you got up to, without you in them.
